What is PEMF? How PEMF may benefit the body and cells
How pulsed electromagnetic fields work, why people use them, and what they may mean for the body and its cells.
In brief
PEMF sends short, repeating pulses of a magnetic field into the body without contact.
It is studied for its influence on cell membranes, cellular energy and circulation.
Evidence is strongest for bone healing, and promising but mixed in other areas.
Home wellness devices support general wellbeing. They are not medical treatment.
What is PEMF?
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. It describes a gentle form of energy in which a device sends short, repeated bursts of a magnetic field through the body, usually from a coil, mat or applicator. A static magnet produces a field that never changes. A pulsed field switches on and off, or rises and falls, many times every second. That change is what makes the field interesting to biology, because a changing magnetic field can induce very small electrical currents in conductive tissue, and the body is full of salty, water-rich fluids that conduct electricity well.
The idea is not new. Scientists have studied electromagnetic fields in living tissue for well over a century. In the late twentieth century, specific pulsed fields were developed for orthopaedic use, and certain PEMF devices have since been cleared by regulators, including the US Food and Drug Administration, for particular medical purposes such as supporting the healing of stubborn bone fractures. Today PEMF also appears in home wellness devices. These are a different category. They are designed to support general wellbeing, comfort and relaxation, they are not medical devices, and they do not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
The body is an electrical system
Every living cell carries an electrical charge. The membrane around a cell separates positively and negatively charged particles, called ions, and this separation creates a small voltage known as the membrane potential. Nerve cells use rapid changes in this voltage to carry signals. Muscle cells use it to contract. Almost every cell uses it to draw in nutrients, expel waste and respond to messages from its neighbours. Tiny gates in the membrane, called ion channels, open and close in response to electrical and chemical cues, letting calcium, sodium and potassium move in and out.
We can measure the electrical side of life every day. An electrocardiogram records the rhythm of the heart. An electroencephalogram records the activity of the brain. These everyday tests remind us that the body is not only chemistry. It is also an organised pattern of electrical and magnetic activity.
Life on Earth also evolved inside a natural magnetic environment. The planet has its own magnetic field, and the atmosphere produces natural low-frequency pulses. Modern life is different: we spend most of our time indoors, surrounded by buildings, screens and artificial fields. Olylife describes PEMF as a way to simulate the Earth's natural pulse magnetism. This is a framing common in the wellness field, and the long-term effects of such supplementation are still being studied. What science can say with confidence is that cells respond to electrical and magnetic cues, which is why researchers keep investigating PEMF.
How PEMF works
A PEMF device is built around a coil of wire. When the device sends a pulse of electric current through the coil, the coil produces a magnetic field. Because that field changes quickly, it passes through clothing, skin and tissue without any contact and induces tiny electrical currents in the fluids and cells it meets. This is the principle of electromagnetic induction, discovered by Michael Faraday in the nineteenth century, and it is why PEMF is described as non-invasive.
Not every PEMF device is the same. Four settings largely shape its effect. Frequency is how many pulses occur each second, measured in hertz. Intensity is the strength of the field. Waveform is the shape of each pulse, such as square, sine or sawtooth. Duration is how long each pulse and each session lasts. Different combinations can produce quite different results, which is one reason research findings on PEMF vary so much from one study to another. Olylife describes the Tera-P90 as operating at 1MHz, with energy that Olylife states works 3 to 5 centimetres beneath the skin surface.
Researchers have proposed several ways in which these fields may influence cells. Most come from laboratory and animal studies, and not all are fully established in humans.
Cell membranes and ion channels. Fields may influence how ions such as calcium move across the membrane. Calcium is a key messenger that helps control muscle contraction, nerve signalling and the activation of genes.
Cellular energy. Some studies suggest PEMF may influence mitochondria, the structures that make ATP, the molecule cells use as fuel. More available energy may help cells maintain and repair themselves.
Nitric oxide and blood flow. Research has found that PEMF may stimulate the release of nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes the walls of blood vessels. Better blood flow, including in the smallest vessels, helps deliver oxygen and nutrients and carry away waste.
Inflammatory and repair signalling. Laboratory work indicates that PEMF may influence signalling molecules involved in the body's inflammatory response and tissue repair, including adenosine receptors.
Cell-to-cell communication. Cells coordinate through chemical and electrical signals. Pulsed fields may help support the electrical side of that conversation.
Taken together, the picture is of a gentle signal that nudges cells toward their normal rhythms rather than forcing a particular outcome. How strongly this translates into noticeable benefits for a person depends on the device, the settings, the individual and how consistently it is used.
What the research suggests
The best-established use of PEMF is in bone healing. Specific devices have regulatory clearance to support the repair of fractures that fail to heal, and this is where the evidence is strongest.
For pain and joint comfort, several randomised trials, including studies in knee osteoarthritis, have reported modest improvements in pain and function in people using PEMF, while other trials found little difference from placebo. Reviews generally describe the evidence as promising but inconsistent. Studies of swelling and discomfort after surgery, of muscle recovery after exercise, and of sleep, stress and mood are smaller still, and results are encouraging in some and inconclusive in others.
There are good reasons for this variation. Devices differ widely in frequency, intensity and waveform. Studies use different session lengths and different groups of people. Placebo effects in wellness research can be strong. One consistent finding is that, within recommended settings, PEMF is generally well tolerated, with few side effects reported, such as occasional temporary tingling or light-headedness.
It is fair to say that PEMF is an active area of research rather than a settled one. Anyone with a medical condition should treat it as a possible complement to professional care, never a replacement for it.
The value of PEMF
Many people are drawn to PEMF for practical reasons rather than technical ones. It is non-invasive and drug-free. It needs no contact, no preparation and, with modern home devices, little skill: you switch on, relax and let a session run. It fits into the quiet parts of a day, such as an evening at home, a break between tasks or a wind-down before bed.
Its value is also in what it encourages. A device you enjoy using becomes a daily ritual, and rituals build healthy habits: slowing down, breathing, resting. PEMF is best seen as one pillar beside sleep, nutrition, movement and medical care, not a substitute for any of them. Value is ultimately personal. A sensible approach is to use a device consistently for several weeks, keep simple notes on how you feel, and judge for yourself.
For households, a single device can serve several adults, which is part of why many families treat it as a long-term investment in everyday wellbeing rather than a short-term purchase.
Potential benefits for the body and its cells
People use PEMF for many reasons. The areas below are the ones most often discussed. They are potential benefits described in research and in user experience, and individual results vary.
Cellular vitality. By supporting membrane function and cellular energy, PEMF is thought to help cells keep doing their daily work of repair and renewal. This is the foundation on which other benefits are built.
Circulation. Through effects on nitric oxide and blood vessel tone, PEMF may support microcirculation, the flow through the smallest vessels. Better circulation is linked to warmer hands and feet, improved delivery of nutrients and quicker removal of waste.
Comfort and mobility. Many users report that regular sessions help muscles and joints feel more relaxed and comfortable, which can make everyday movement easier, particularly for older adults and people with active lifestyles.
Recovery. Athletes and active people often use PEMF after exercise to support the body's normal recovery processes, including the settling of soreness and stiffness.
Rest and sleep. Gentle pulsed fields are associated with a calming effect on the nervous system, and many users report falling asleep more easily and sleeping more deeply when they use PEMF in the evening.
Stress balance. Because the nervous system and the cells share the same electrical language, supporting one may help the other. Many people describe a steadier, calmer feeling after a session.
Healthy ageing. As we age, cellular energy and circulation tend to decline. Supporting these areas is one reason older adults are among the most common PEMF users.
PEMF in Olylife devices
Olylife builds PEMF into several devices. The Tera-P90 combines 1MHz PEMF with terahertz wave energy for foot and whole-body use. The Tera-P90+ adds the Frost Age Beauty Device, the Revitaluxe Massager and 20 intensity levels. The Vitality Wand pairs PEMF and terahertz in a portable 1200W wand, and the Shaken Massager includes PEMF among seven technologies in a wearable belt. Product details come from Olylife, and full specifications are on each product page.
OlylifeX is a registered reseller. Our team can help you compare these devices and place your order through the official Olylife system.
Using PEMF well
Read the user manual before your first session and follow it. Begin gently, with shorter sessions and lower intensity, and build up as you feel comfortable. Consistency matters more than intensity: regular use over several weeks is usually how people judge a device. Drink water, keep warm and comfortable, and treat sessions as a moment to rest. Pair PEMF with good sleep, balanced meals and gentle movement. If anything feels wrong, stop and speak with a healthcare professional.
Keep a simple diary of sleep, energy and comfort for four weeks. It turns a general impression into something you can actually review.
Safety: who should not use PEMF
PEMF is generally well tolerated, but it is not suitable for everyone. Do not use a PEMF device if you have:
A pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or any implanted electronic medical device.
An insulin pump, neurostimulator or electronic life-support equipment.
Epilepsy or a history of seizures.
Metal implants, surgical clips or stents in the treatment area, unless cleared by your physician.
Active cancer or cancer treatment, unless supervised by your physician.
A serious cardiovascular condition, thrombosis or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
A bleeding disorder, or you take anticoagulant medication.
An organ transplant or immunosuppressive therapy.
A fever, acute infection or open wound in the treatment area.
Avoid use over the abdomen, pelvis or lower back if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are nursing. Olylife products are for adults aged 18 and over. If you have any medical condition or take prescription medication, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.
The bottom line
PEMF is a simple idea with a deep scientific backdrop: living cells run on electricity, and gentle pulsed fields may help support the signals and energy that keep them working well. The evidence is strongest in bone health and still developing elsewhere, so realistic expectations are the best starting point. Used consistently and safely, PEMF can be a calm, convenient part of a wider wellness routine.

What is Terahertz? How terahertz waves may benefit the body
A plain-language guide to terahertz waves, how they interact with the body, and why they are used in wellness technology.
In brief
Terahertz waves are non-ionising electromagnetic waves between microwaves and infrared light.
Water absorbs them, so they warm tissue gently, supporting comfort and circulation.
Research into terahertz and biology is young, and some wellness claims are still being studied.
Olylife combines terahertz with PEMF in selected devices.
What is terahertz?
Light is only one small part of a much larger family of electromagnetic waves. At one end are radio waves and microwaves, which have long wavelengths and low frequencies. At the other end are visible light, ultraviolet rays and X-rays, which have short wavelengths and high frequencies. Terahertz waves sit in the middle, in the band between microwaves and infrared light. Scientists usually define the terahertz band as roughly 0.1 to 10 terahertz, which corresponds to wavelengths of about 30 to 3,000 micrometres. One terahertz is a trillion cycles per second. Olylife describes its terahertz technology across a broader range of 3 to 3,000 micrometres, which extends into what is commonly called the far-infrared.
For decades this region was nicknamed the terahertz gap because it was difficult to generate and detect. That changed in recent decades, and terahertz is now used in airport security scanners, in spectroscopy to identify materials, in quality inspection and in research into next-generation communications. Terahertz waves are non-ionising: their photons carry too little energy to break chemical bonds or damage DNA directly, which is very different from X-rays.
In wellness, terahertz is sometimes called the light of life, a phrase that reflects how closely this band of energy matches the natural vibrations of biological molecules and water. It is a poetic name for a real scientific connection, which we explain below.
A short history
Scientists measured far-infrared radiation as early as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but practical sources and detectors were scarce. The breakthrough came in the 1980s and 1990s, when new techniques, including ultrafast lasers and photoconductive antennas, made it possible to produce and detect terahertz pulses reliably. This opened a field of research known as terahertz time-domain spectroscopy.
Since then, laboratories have explored terahertz imaging of skin and tissue, non-destructive testing of materials and pharmaceuticals, and the way terahertz waves interact with water and biological molecules. Home wellness devices followed, using emitters that produce far-infrared and terahertz-range energy in a form that is safe and convenient for everyday use.
How terahertz works
Biology and terahertz share a natural link. The body is about 60 percent water, and many of the large molecules inside cells, including proteins and DNA, move, twist and vibrate at frequencies that fall in or near the terahertz range. Hydrogen bonds, the weak links that give water and proteins their shape, also vibrate at these frequencies. This is why terahertz spectroscopy is such a powerful research tool: it lets scientists see these motions. The wellness idea is that energy in this range may interact gently with the same molecular motions.
Current understanding suggests several routes by which this can matter for a person.
Gentle warmth. Terahertz and far-infrared energy is readily absorbed by water, so it is converted into heat in the upper layers of tissue. Mild warmth is a well-understood effect. It widens blood vessels, which supports circulation, and it relaxes muscles and soft tissue, which supports comfort. Warmth then spreads deeper by conduction and by the movement of blood.
Circulation. Far-infrared warming has been studied for its effect on blood flow, including in studies of people whose vessels are under strain. Better local circulation brings more oxygen and nutrients and helps remove waste.
Molecular and cellular signalling. Early laboratory studies have explored whether terahertz exposure can influence ion channels, cell membranes and the activity of genes. Results are interesting but preliminary, and they come mainly from cells in dishes, not from people using home devices.
The resonance idea. Olylife describes terahertz energy as resonating with healthy cells, energising them while generating heat in stagnant or poorly functioning areas. This is the manufacturer's explanation of how the technology works. It is a useful way to picture the concept, but it is not yet established as a medical mechanism.
An honest point about depth is worth making. Pure terahertz radiation is strongly absorbed by water, so in laboratory physics it penetrates only the outer layers of skin. Wellness devices usually rely on emitters, such as ceramic or graphene-based elements, that produce warmth and far-infrared energy which the body then distributes. Olylife states that its devices reach deeper tissue, for example 3 to 5 centimetres for the Tera-P90 and 20 to 30 centimetres for the Vitality Wand. These are Olylife's stated figures.
The value of terahertz
The value of terahertz in a home device is largely about comfort and consistency. Gentle, penetrating warmth is one of the oldest and most widely loved forms of self-care, from hot springs to heated stones to saunas. Terahertz and far-infrared devices aim to deliver that feeling in a convenient, controllable form, without the heat and humidity of a sauna and without leaving the house.
There is also value in what warmth does to the mind. A warm, quiet session invites the body to let go of tension. Many users describe it as a daily pause that helps separate the working day from the evening. In traditional wellness thinking, warmth is associated with keeping the body's channels open and moving. In modern terms, that corresponds to the familiar benefits of circulation and relaxation.
For people who find exercise difficult or who feel cold easily, such as some older adults, gentle warmth can be especially welcome. As with any wellness tool, its value grows with regular use and realistic expectations.
Potential benefits for the body
The following are the benefits most often associated with terahertz and far-infrared warmth. They describe potential support for general wellbeing, and individual results vary.
Circulation. Warmth widens blood vessels and increases blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue. Many users notice warmer hands and feet and a feeling of freer movement after a session.
Muscle and joint comfort. Heat helps soft tissue relax and become more flexible, which can ease the feeling of tightness in muscles and joints. This is why warmth is a familiar companion to stretching and gentle exercise.
Relaxation and sleep. A warm, quiet session can settle the nervous system. Many people find that an evening session helps them unwind and fall asleep more comfortably.
Recovery. Active people often use warmth after training to help the body settle, supporting the normal processes of muscle recovery.
Skin and surface comfort. Warmth increases blood flow to the skin, and many users enjoy the feeling of a warm, refreshed complexion after a session.
Everyday vitality. Warmth, comfort and better rest tend to support energy and mood the next day, which is why many users describe a general lift in vitality. Different people respond differently, and benefits often build gradually with regular use.
Terahertz and PEMF together
Terahertz and PEMF are different kinds of energy. PEMF is a pulsed magnetic field that is believed to interact with the electrical activity of cells. Terahertz is electromagnetic radiation in the far-infrared region that delivers warmth and may interact with molecular vibrations. Olylife's approach is to combine them. In the Tera-P90 and Tera-P90+, 1MHz PEMF and terahertz wave energy work together. In the Vitality Wand, a dual terahertz and PEMF emitter is paired with adjustable heat.
The logic is complementary. Warmth encourages blood vessels to open and tissue to relax, while pulsed fields are studied for their influence on cell signalling and energy. Together they aim to address both the comfort of the tissue and the activity of the cells within it. This is Olylife's design philosophy, and published clinical evidence on this specific combination is limited. Many users nonetheless find the combined experience pleasant and easy to fit into a routine.
Terahertz in Olylife devices
The Tera-P90 combines 1MHz PEMF with terahertz wave energy (3 to 3,000 micrometres) for foot and whole-body use. The Tera-P90+ adds the Frost Age Beauty Device (RF and EMS), the Revitaluxe Massager (magnetic fusion, EMS, TENS and red light), 20 intensity levels and an infrared remote control. The Vitality Wand is a 1200W wand with an alumina graphene nanotube emitter that Olylife states has 50 percent or more terahertz content, three heat settings, one cool mode, an AI auto shut-off after 45 minutes and a stand for hands-free use. All details are as stated by Olylife. See each product page for more.
Common questions
Is terahertz radiation dangerous? Terahertz waves are non-ionising, which means they do not carry enough energy to damage DNA the way X-rays or ultraviolet rays can. Wellness devices operate at low power and their main effect is gentle warmth. As with any heat source, the practical risk is overheating the skin, which is why following the manual matters.
Will it feel hot? It should feel comfortably warm, never painful. Most devices offer adjustable heat settings so that you can find your level.
Is it the same as an infrared sauna? They are related, because both deliver far-infrared energy. A sauna warms the whole body for a longer session, while a terahertz device is typically used on a targeted area or on the feet and body for a shorter, focused session.
Using terahertz devices well
Start with short sessions at the lowest comfortable heat and increase gradually. Warmth should feel pleasant, never hot or painful. Check your skin during and after a session, and stop if it becomes red or uncomfortable. Keep the emitter at the distance the manual recommends, never cover a running heating device unless the manual allows it, and do not fall asleep during a session unless the device is designed for it. Drink water, and give yourself a few quiet minutes afterwards. If you use the Vitality Wand, follow Olylife's guidance on its cool mode and on use around the eyes, children and pets.
Safety and who should be careful
Because terahertz devices work through warmth, take extra care if you have reduced sensation in your skin, for example from diabetes or nerve damage, or if you are sensitive to heat. Do not use terahertz devices over open wounds, infected or inflamed skin, and avoid use during a fever.
All the cautions that apply to PEMF also apply here. Do not use these devices if you have a pacemaker or any implanted electronic medical device, an insulin pump, a neurostimulator or epilepsy. Avoid use over the abdomen, pelvis or lower back if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are nursing. Consult a physician first if you have cardiovascular disease, take anticoagulants, have had an organ transplant or are managing cancer. Olylife products are for adults aged 18 and over.
The bottom line
Terahertz is a real and fascinating part of the electromagnetic spectrum, and its link to the vibrations of water and biological molecules is genuine science. In a wellness setting, its most dependable gift is gentle warmth, which supports circulation, comfort and relaxation. Claims about deeper cellular effects are still being researched, so approach them with curiosity and realistic expectations, and combine terahertz with the basics of good sleep, nutrition and movement.
